    GREEK LEGEND: ”DAEDALUS AND ICARUS”

The 6th D grade of our school worked on the beautiful Greek legend: “Daedalus and Icarus” in November 2019. We were excited about that amazing and meaningful myth.

Here is how we worked on it step by step:

    • Introduction / The Ancient Greece.
    • Predicting / A picture of Daedalus and Icarus and key words. Questions to the pupils: 1) What does the title tell you about the story? 2) What clues does the picture give you for what the story might be about?  3) What do the key words tell you the story might be about?
    • Reading the text and explaining the new words.
    • Understanding questions.
    • Posters / preparation, presentation, video recording
    • Choose the correct answer/ movement in teaching as a longterm memory stimulator.
    • Summarizing / teamwork
    • Crossword.
    • The song “Icarus” from Bastille. 1) The pupils listen the song for the first time. “Write the missing words” exercise. 2) We read the lyrics and comment them. 3) We try to sing the song all together.
    • Reflection and comparison / song and story.
    • The lesson / song and story.
    • Below you can find pictures and videos.                                                                                                                                        A picture is worth a thousand words. 😉

         Catalonian legend The Four Bars

The Fifth graders read The Four Bars in English and made some notes and pictures about it. Lleganda medieval de Guifre el Pilos (Medieval legend of Wilfred the Hairy). We also studied the fascinating history of Catalonia while working on this theme.

Hungarian legend The Sword of God

The Fifth graders read the Hungarian legend in English and drew some pictures of Prince Attila and his magic sword. They learnt a lot about his conquests over Europe and wrote stories about them and Attila the Hun himself. We tried to get to the bottom of the person.

    The legend from Great Britain:

    Robin Hood

Younger students studied the legend of Robin Hood.

We read the Finnish children's version of the story. The book is written by beloved author called Mauri Kunnas. Students discussed about the characters, plot and historical time of the story in a casual way with the teachers.

The teacher borrowed a pile of books from the city library for free.

Special education students listened a chapter from the book, made a Robin's target and arrows. They wrote central words from the story to the arrows.

Spedial education teacher Elina Tuomi drawing a king's muse. With her were the students of the class 2-3G, school assistents and the Finnish as a second language teacher Kaisa Ratilainen. We couldn't film the students so there are no pictures of them.

After reading students answered questions about the story in a written form. Since there were many Finnish as a second language students, we studied basic vocabulary a lot, like Robin Hood's clothes, buildings and nature words and so on in an inspiring way. There were also creative assignments where you had to draw and colour pictures.

Most of the students thought that the story was exciting and were very interested! Some of them also liked the new TV animation of Robin Hood.

In mid November 2019 we decided to make a Christmas play. All of the students knew the story by then more or less. The Finnish language teacher wrote a play called Robin Hood Saves Christmas and made a song for it. She started to practice the play first with the main characters during her own classes. The little actors practiced especially reading and pronunciaton. Most of the students were Finnish as a second language students so it was good exercise for them. After the main characters had learned a lot, the whole classes started to practice with all of the teachers. The coulisse for the stage was designed by an elementary school teacher. The other teachers and school staff helped her.

The Christmas play was performed by two classes. The Finnish as a second language teacher rented a new professional camera so that the classes could get a good film of the show. Before Christmas kids got the film for themselves and it was fun to watch it together too.

     The stage is ready!

Children sang and danced a song that Kaisa made especially for the play with the help of the school's music teacher Katja Koivisto. Kaisa thought of a tune and lyrics. She recorded the song and Katja made notes of it with her ipad. Special ed teacher Laura Laurila played the piano in the Christmas party.

Two classes performed the show. We got good feedback from the audience. The elementary school teacher Ari Malkamäki filmed the show both times and Kaisa made a little movie of it.

Actors got roses after the show.

    Robin Hood

    Marion and friends

    The sheriff

    Prince Juhana

In January we continued with the same legend. Two students started to work on an interview with the teacher during Finnish a second language classes. They came up with 13 questions for Robin Hood. Then Sophie Linnermo who played the Robin Hood, put on her Robin Hood costume and her classmates Jnah Al-Dalawi and Alisa Auer interviewed her. Teacher filmed the interview. We translated the interview in English and made a story of it for the O.W.L Magazine. (https://magazine.jilster.com/pageflip/2745cc10-40df-11ea-bd18-02fe49884f2c)

Also the other class that performed the play in the Christmas party worked with an interview, but there is no story of it in the magazine. It was educational for the students to think of good questions and practice their communication skills.
